Paintings

Oil on canvas by Modest Urgell Inglada, one of the great Catalan painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to a painter and illustrator, a disciple of Martí Alsina and a companion of other great painters like the Vayreda brothers or the Masrieras, Urgell was also a playwright. He studied in Paris where he got to know Courbet, a key figure in French Realism.

Urgell first became known as an illustrator, and started by making portraits and traditional auques. In painting, Urgell focused primarily on landscapes and maritime scenes. In this piece, the author shows the everyday image of llaguts landing after a long day of fishing.
