Intangible Cultural Heritage

Forum of Mediterranean Maritime Heritage

The AMMM Forum of Mediterranean Maritime Heritage held in Rovigno in 2009 focused on intangible maritime heritage and museum-community relations. After a decade, the Maritime Museum of Barcelona would like to commit to promoting a sincere new reflection on the actions and projects that maritime museums have carried out, both from the point of view of research and dissemination, and on the relationships consolidated to date with their respective communities, the true owners of intangible cultural manifestations.

Following the adoption of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003, museums have been reviewing the concept of cultural heritage. Today, museums are redefining their discourses and moving closer to an intangible heritage, where society is reflected. There is now room for ways of life, social practice, knowledge, techniques, expression of meanings and mind-sets of different individuals and groups.

Museums are active agents that play a major role in safeguarding this heritage. They carry out works of analysis, research and documentation, and disseminate intangible cultural manifestations related to their collections and themes. However, they may be in risk of being alienated from the original context of creation and development of these cultural manifestations, and of drifting apart from or altering this living heritage with identifying character. For this reason, it is important to strengthen the relationship between museums and the holders of this heritage in order to establish a rich and dynamic exchange.
